Dr. Spinell is a graduate of the University of Connecticut where he majored in biological sciences. In 1970, he received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Following graduation, he had the opportunity to work with practitioners who were investigators in the early development of soft contact lenses. It is through these early professional associations that he cultivated his interest in contact lenses as a modality for vision correction.
Dr. Spinell has been a member of the professional staff of The Eye Institute since it opened its doors in 1978. For nearly 35 years, he has had a significant role in teaching the theory and clinical application of contact lenses to optometry students at The Pennsylvania College of Optometry. In addition to his expertise in contact lens practice, Dr. Spinell also holds a special interest in sports vision.
Dr. Spinell is a Diplomat in Cornea and Contact Lens, as awarded by the American Academy of Optometry. Achieving Diplomat status is a unique distinction, as only 200 practitioners world-wide have this advanced standing in the knowledge and skill set associated with cornea and contact lens. Dr. Spinell is the author of many articles and textbook chapters related to contact lens practice and sports vision. 4/2009
